Okay, so has nobody else spotted the reference Malcolm Cassin made about “Beast Bog” in the document J.Howey got from Leitrim County Council Planning Authority?
I did a google search on "Broadbent" and "beast bog" and found this creepy as hell website (http://beastbog.webs.com/) detailing the legend of Beast Bog and an excavation of a subterranean temple or some such thing under the bog in 1956 by Dr. Broadbent. Beast Bog and Kilmatogh bog are the same place. I don't want to ruin it, but OFMG, the archaeologist was crazier than a bag of ferrets in a meth lab. Like, seriously!

Yup, looks that way. Makes you wonder what else is going on out there, eh? I want to take a JCB out and cut turf there and maybe find the entrance to the structure and go exploring its nether depths. Who's with me?!

So, this man who was a professional archaeologist, had a mental breakdown or something and killed his friends? Way to be crazy in a stereotypical fashion! Where is Coldridge Asylum? I've never heard of the place.

Hi Mary, the Coldridge Asylum was in the neighbourhood of Coldridge in Blackross. It's been turned into a hostel a number of years ago after the Health Board closed it down and sold it to its present owner. The building is a creepy old Victorian mansion. I pity the poor sods that stay there on their backpacking holidays.

Count me in, Kidrotten! What I wouldn't give to go down there and see such a building with my own eyes! I have friends who are into exploring Souterrains; they've got all the safety equipment and tonnes of experience, they'd probably jump at the chance to explore that place. Who owns the bog now, does anybody know?

Leitrim County Council own the bog, MetaMur. Archaeological sites in Ireland are State property, Kidrotten, so you'd get into big trouble bringing in a JCB and digging up the ground. Just read up on the law regarding this and the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2004 provide for the protection of archaeological sites in Ireland.
"Other than under licence, it is illegal to search archaeological sites, both on land and underwater. Unlicensed individuals who engage in general searches of archaeological sites run the risk of prosecution. A number of successful prosecutions have been taken against individuals who have been found to have contravened this legislation. Unauthorised devices found on or in the vicinity of certain monuments may be seized and detained by a member of An Garda Síochána pending prosecution by the State." Well, that appears to be the case, Kidritten. I went to the library and asked about Coldridge Asylum and the librarian told me the Local Studies section of the library holds the entire collection of papers and documents that once belonged to the asylum. They acquired them after the institution closed down. (Here's a catalogue of their collection: https://www.scribd.com/document/322865133/Coldridge-Asylum-Papers).
I went looking through some of the old case files and discovered Broadbent's Patient File (you can read a scan of it here: https://www.scribd.com/document/322864732/Patient-File-Raymond-Broadbent). It's not the whole file, when I'm through reading it I'll scan the rest of it and upload it to Scribd...then everyone can read it.

Actually, it's very common especially for significant institutions (not just the mental ones) in the town. They've also got a healthy record of local authors' manuscripts and letters, etc. They mostly hold the records for local research purposes. The library doesn't charge to browse them, but you're not allowed to take them out like you would a book. They do allow in-house photocopying of the desired documents (that's how I got a copy of them to put up on Scribd).

Normally, I would be horrified at the treatment of mental patients in asylums like that, especially as the inquiry into mother and baby homes begins (it’s definitely time to shine a light on psychiatric "care" hospitals in Ireland), but that Broadbent fellow was a guilty killer and deserved all the "treatments" he got while he was there, in my opinion.

Well he died there and never got out, as the papers said, so you'd be happy to hear that, Mary.
His treatment must have been freaking awful for him to strangle himself the way he did?! Unfortunately, he wasn't alone in dying in a mental hospital, I was reading that mortality rates were high in those places, with more than 11,000 deaths every decade between the 1920s and 1960s.
I definitely agree with campaigners looking for a national enquiry into Psychiatric hospitals. A lot of the patients were young girls who got pregnant out of wedlock and were locked up because families were ashamed of their behaviour and afraid that the Church would castigate them for it. It was easier to lock them up than have to deal with the stigma. No good keeping that sort of past hid, at least, that's my thoughts on the unsavoury subject.

I scanned the most interesting pieces, given his file was mostly staff memos about medication and medical letters between Broadbent's doctors. The most interesting piece (I think) is the story of the excavation of Beast Bog in Broadbent's own hand....and a weird drawing he made. Have a gander.
