Oh don't bother, John; it's an old legend about an early English colony in America that disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Legend goes: The explorer Sir Walter Raleigh sent three groups from England to North Carolina to settle in Roanoke Island in 1584, 1585 and 1587. The leader of the 1585 exploration, John White, returned to England for supplies for the colony but was delayed in his return until 1590 because of England's war with Spain. When he came back to Roanoke Island, all the colonists were gone, leaving only the word “Croatoan” carved on a post and the letters “CRO” on a tree. To this day, no one really knows what happened to the colony. It's one of the greatest - and arguably the creepiest – of mysteries in American history.

Afraid I've never watched that show. But what does 'Croatoan' mean, was it some sort of code or clue?

Maybe.... Actually, I think it was the name of another island nearby and a local tribe of Native Americans Indians.

There were no bodies discovered and besides the Croatoan Indians were believed to have been on very good terms with English settlers of the Roanoke Colony. It's recorded they were excellent agriculturalists and provided food to the colonists, so, it could possibly mean the settlers joined up with the Indians to become part of the Croatoan tribe as a desperate act of survival when their colony collapsed.
